About

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are a remarkable 1D material due to their extraordinary mechanical, thermal, and electrical properties. However, CNTs are inherently non-piezoelectric, making them ideal for nanoelectromechanical systems applications. Recent research by the PI has found that piezoelectricity can be achieved from non-piezoelectric graphene through an interplay of symmetry, nanoscale size-effects, and flexoelectricity. Despite the extensive interest in CNTs, their flexoelectric/piezoelectric properties have not been reported. This research program aims to merge various investigations into a unified framework, leading to the development of CNT-based piezoelectric load sensors using a novel flexoelectric concept. The research will involve synthesizing and preparing CNTs using CVD and spin-coating techniques, conducting experimental characterizations using various techniques, developing atomistic models using simulations, and determining the mechanical, electronic, flexoelectric, and piezoelectric properties of CNTs using atomistic modeling and experiments. The CNT-based piezoelectric load sensors will be developed by optimizing all parameters. If implemented, this research will serve as the starting point for designing and developing new generation CNT-based piezoelectric sensors for various applications. The outcome of this research will establish India's preeminence in the design and development of nanotailored sensors made of new piezoelectric CNTs using a novel flexoelectric concept under the 'Make in India' flagship.
