Project Overview

Mxene is emerging as a very promising electrode material for high-performance micro-supercapacitors for micro-scale electronics. However, Mxene-based micro-supercapacitors reported so far represent low areal (≤ 10 μWh cm-2) and volumetric (≤ 20 mWh cm-3) energy densities, due to its narrow working voltage in the aqueous system (0.6-1.0 V). Herein, we propose the construction of high-voltage, high-energy and flexible iono-gel-based micro-supercapacitors with Interdigitated microelectrodes of ionic liquid pre-intercalated Mxene films. Benefitting from the pre-intercalation of ionic liquid, the as-fabricated micro-supercapacitors, working at a voltage range greater than 3 V in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMIMBF4) and EMIMBF4/PVDF –HFP, it exhibits high areal and volumetric energy density. Moreover, all-solid-state micro-supercapacitors using ionogel electrolytes will exhibit exceptional flexibility without capacitance loss under various deformation, and seamless integration free of metal-based interconnection for boosting voltage output. Therefore, here we fabricate Mxene-based micro-supercapacitors with high-energy density and power density with high cyclic stability which hold great potential for direct integration of flexible and miniature electronics.
