About
Patna, India's second-largest city, is located near the seismically active Himalayan area. The city faces various seismic hazards, including ground shaking and soil liquefaction-related hazards. The current practice for evaluating soil liquefaction susceptibility is the simplified procedure, which has limitations in predicting liquefaction hazards in sand with a significant percentage of fines. This study proposes a modified shear wave velocity-based method to overcome these limitations. The study will involve collecting soil bore hole data from various parts of Patna city, using the simplified procedure based on SPT recommended in the IS code. The peak ground acceleration will be used to estimate liquefaction hazard. The second step uses seismic hazard analyses (DSHA, PSHA) to estimate liquefaction hazard. The fourth step involves multi-channel analysis of surface wave (MASW) tests at various locations in the city, using the updated liquefaction potential assessment method based on shear wave velocity. The fifth step performs one-dimensional ground response analyses based on estimated soil profiles at various parts of the city. The results will be presented in terms of site classification maps, acceleration amplification hazard maps, liquefaction hazard maps, liquefaction potential index maps, and damage potential maps. This study aims to identify potentially damageable areas in Patna city against ground shaking and soil liquefaction hazards, ensuring the safety of its residents and surrounding areas.
