Project Overview

Meta-conglomeratic horizons are crucial for tracing early crustal existence, identifying sediment sources, understanding paleogeographic conditions, and strain distribution in folded terrain. They are also useful in addressing the tectonic evolution of basins. The Champaner basin, located in Gujarat, India, is a prime example of this, consisting of thick clastic sequences with minor carbonate bands. The basin was metamorphosed during Meso-Neo Proterozoic time and is believed to be part of the Aravalli sequence. The Champaner Group, consisting of a persistent intraformational meta-conglomeratic horizon and wacke from the Jaban Formation, can serve as a proxy for decoding the basin's tectonic evolution. The rocks of the Champaner Group are poly-deformed, exhibiting superposed folds on regional to meso-scopic scale. These rocks contain valuable economic deposits like manganese and uranium, controlled at the F2 fold hinges. However, the relationship between mineralization and superposed strain within these deformed rocks remains unexplored. The stratigraphic status of the Champaner Group is controversial due to its isolated occurrence and unmatched structural disposition with the main Aravalli domain. The provenance and exact time frame of deposition, metamorphism, and orogenesis are still unclear. Addressing these issues will help understand the position of the Champaner basin, evolve the tectonic model, and its relationship with the Rodinia supercontinent assembly.
