Tectonometamorphic investigation of the metapelites around Sini, Jharkhand (Eastern India): Constraints from textural relationship, Chemographic projection, U-Th-Pb Geochronology

Project Overview

The study area is a part of Singhbhum metamorphic belt and the region assumes a special significance because of the exposures of the classic Barrovian Sequence. Sini is a small town under Seraikela District of Jharkhand, India. The tectonic windows provide valuable clues for unraveling the complicated and synthetic stratigraphic set-up of the Singhbhum metamorphic belt. Here the rocks are disposed in an plunging geoanticlunorium structure which is also known as Singhbhum anticlinorium and the lower grades rocks occupy shallower structural level and higher grade rocks occur deeper level. The P-T-t trajectory of metamorphism can be deduced through reaction textures, supported by electron microprobe data, geothermobarometry, pseudosection, pertinent petrogenetic grids and geochronology. Representative and oriented samples will be collected for systematic petrological investigations. Detailed petrographic studies will be carried out to suggest relative time relations between various phases of deformation and metamorphic crystallization. The study of textural details will reveal complex reactions involved in the genesis of the diverse mineral assemblages during the prolonged metamorphic history of the area. Electron microprobe analysis will throw light on the phase petrology, mineral chemistry, distribution of elements in coexisting phases, partitioning of elements to suggest equilibrium and disequilibrium conditions of metamorphism. Chemical U-Th-Pb dating techniques to monazites in metapelties will be utilized to infer timing of metamorphism. From the combination of this data the probable P-T-t trajectory of the studied rocks will be deduced. On the basis of the calculated P-T-t trajectory a tectonic model for the evolution of the metapelitic rocks will be suggested, more specifically it will be assessed whether metamorphism took place in ensialic orogenesis which is stands by the rifting and the major source of heat is generated by mantle upwelling.
