The Neogene Period, encompasses the interval between 23-2.6 Ma and represent one of the most crucial periods in climate and geological history. Neo-Tethys Sea was vanished with the formation of the Himalaya and also the Indian monsoon initiated/intensified during the Neogene. Northeastern (NE) India has 80% of the sedimentary succession in India. Neogene folded molasse sediments are found in the Hills of Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. This tectonically active region is a high seismic hazard potential zone. The region represents one of the least geologically documented areas and basic aspects of biostratigraphic age, paleoenvironment and paleoclimate studies remain poorly known, particularly for the Neogene succession. Till date, the stratigraphic subdivisions of the sedimentary sedimnets within the Surma Group of Neogene age in the region are based on lithology, without the control paleontological and geochemical proxies. Therefore the proposed project aims to carry out the detailed investigation on the occurrence of microfossils and other associated fauna and flora leading to a high-resolution biostratigraphy, paleoclimate, paleoenvironment and paleogeography of the region by using multi-proxy records.
