Project Overview

The project aims to achieve a detailed conceptual understanding of Laterite distribution in the state of Goa using an integrated approach. The work proposed here will help in understanding the lateral coverage, cross-sectional profile, and geochemical nature of laterites. The lateral coverage, the cross-sectional profile will be obtained by extensive fieldwork at well-exposed laterite sections. Geochemical studies will be carried out using different techniques such as XRD, XRF, HR-ICP, SEM, and EPMA. Geochemical modeling technique will be used to understand the genesis of laterite and its relation to the Protolith or the parent rock. Apart from this, geophysical techniques will be used to decipher the storage, depletion, and replenishment of groundwater potential. While Geotechnical analysis such as dry density of lateritic rocks, specific gravity, void ratio, water absorption, the uniaxial compressive strength, moisture content, and other related parameters will also be studied. The chemical data obtain on trace elements and REE will contribute to the understanding of the economic importance of laterites (if any). Secondary mineralization and degree of alteration such as saussuritization and uralitization will be known. With the help of remote sensing data and proxies mentioned above, the project proposed aims to develop a sustainable model depicting laterite coverage (type, thickness) and a potential site for groundwater. The proposed work holds societal benefits.
