Project Overview

The project "Sequence Stratigraphy and Paleoenvironment of the Renji Formation, Manipur, India: Integrating Sedimentological and Ichnological Data" is a rapidly evolving research project aiming to integrate trace fossils and sedimentological features to interpret sequence stratigraphy, paleoenvironment, and basin characterization of the Renji Formation, Barail Group in Manipur. The Renji Formation is a new geological formation in Manipur, with the only basic literature on it being Evans's work from 1932. The main objectives of the research proposal include sedimentological characterization, ichnological description, recognition of key sequence stratigraphic surfaces using substrate-controlled trace fossils, and appraisal of sequence stratigraphy and paleoenvironment of the Renji succession. The first objective will involve interpreting associated sedimentary structures, recording lithology, and analyzing petrographic analyses for mineralogical composition and sediment texture. The second objective will involve documentation of in-situ trace fossil specimens and identification of various ichnofacies, which act as signatures produced by the response of benthos to environmental factors. The third objective will involve identifying discontinuities using omission suites and careful analysis of vertical softground ichnologic successions. The fourth objective will be assessed through integration of the results of objectives 1 to 3. The project aims to provide a better understanding of the nitty-gritty of the Renji Formation, enhancing its understanding of sedimentological facts, sequence stratigraphic characteristics, and paleoenvironmental conditions.
