Project Overview

The project aims to conduct detailed petrological investigations of Rangpo base-metal mineralization in Sikkim, a region with limited mineralogical and petrological details. The nature of the ore-forming process and its metallogenic evolution in this region remains a puzzle due to limited research. The mineralization hosted by metasediments has important tectonic features that need attention to address the problem of tectonic setting. The proposed work will enhance our understanding of the evolution of metallogenic processes in the Himalaya and help typify the mineralization pattern in the Himalaya following global occurrences of base metal in different tectonic settings. Detailed field observations relating to petrological, mineralogical geothermobarometric, and tectonic studies will be carried out across the terrain to bring out P-T conditions of mineralization formation and source of ore-forming fluid. More significant base-metals can be used as potential tools for deriving the P-T trajectory of formation and metamorphism. P-T pseudosections will provide a more complete description of the chemistry of the metamorphic host rock. Thermodynamic modeling and fluid inclusions study of ore mineral and host rock from Rangpo have been neglected. The research proposal is fully integrated with the field, focusing on the fluid-P–T evolution of Rangpo base metal mineralization, which is one of the most poorly understood segments of mineralization in the Sikkim region of north-east India.
