Project Overview
Signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) meant primarily for positioning and navigation have also been applied for meteorology and aeronomy. A new idea known as GNSS -Reflectometry (GNSS-R) uses reflected GNSS signals for earth remote sensing. Suitable processing of the scattered GNSS signals lead to an altimeter or a scatterometer allowing estimation of land or ocean surface heights, roughness or dielectric properties of the underlying media. Using these products, geophysical parameters such as mesoscale ocean topography, ocean surface winds, soil moisture, vegetation, snow pack and sea ice can be estimated. In order to derive the remote sensing parameters understanding of the interaction of the electromagnetic transmission with the intended target dielectric and the nature of the reflected signals is required. Computational Electromagnetic (CEM) methods for numerical simulation, modeling and analysis of the incumbent scattering process is suitable for this study. The aim of the project is to complete numerical modeling and simulation of the GNSS-R scattering process.
