Project Overview

This project aims to design a high-gain miniaturized planar antenna for wearable and implantable devices for Internet of Things (IoT) applications. To improve power transfer efficiency (PTE) of the wireless power transfer (WPT) system, a metamaterial (MTM) surface/slab will be integrated with a high-gain receiving antenna. The WPT system will operate at the industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band of 2.40-2.48 GHz. Various wireless solutions can improve PTE, operational distance, and energy conversion efficiency by making the reception less sensitive to the angle of the incident wave and polarization. A small, perfectly positioned antenna is more likely to offer optimal performance, but it must provide the intended coverage at the least possible power consumption. The choice and design of an IoT antenna depend on the frequency range, transmission strength, and availability of space. IoT networks smartly transmit/receive small chunks of data in various network topologies, and typically use less complex omnidirectional antennas. Some applications, such as wearable electronics and implantable devices, require low-profile and conformal antennas. The energy consumption of IoT sensors is an important parameter in wireless sensor network system design. IoT applications incorporate advancements in computer networking, microelectronics, and modern communication systems, enabling remote control of physical sensing and actuating devices over the Internet. Radiofrequency (RF) WPT technology is an alternative technology for powering these devices. The project focuses on investigating the possibility and restrictions of using RF WPT technology for wearable and implantable IoT devices.
