Project Overview

shear zones, formed due to rock shearing, are an excellent natural experimental site for exploring imposed stresses and conditions for strength mobilization during the formation and evolution of shear zones. The research aims to address strength mobilization under minimal cyclic and constant stresses, as well as incremental stress conditions for the formation of shear zones. The study will investigate whether structural and mechanical anisotropies and petro-inhomogeneity participate in strength mobilization, if fluid influences mechanical anisotropy during shearing, and if fatigue and creep are involved in the evolution of shear zones. The research will develop criteria concerning constraints of inhomogeneity and anisotropy on strength mobilization under variable sets of temperatures, pressures, and fluids for the formation and evolution of shear zones. The study will be conducted in the son Valley, central India, and will use a fabricated experimental shearing system, drone system, ultrasonic concrete tester, and schmidt's rebound hammer. The research will also indirectly benefit hydrocarbon extraction, groundwater and geothermal energy disposal, hazardous waste disposal, and underground space creation.
