Project Overview

The rapid growth of production and consumption leads to an increase in waste, necessitating the development of energy-efficient and environmentally friendly recycling methods. Anaerobic digestion (AD) of organic waste is a promising method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and producing hydrocarbons like methane. Pretreatment of the substrate is necessary to increase efficiency and yield of biogas. A vortex layer apparatus of ferromagnetic particles (VLA) is a promising and energy-efficient method for preparing substrates for fermentation. The Russian team has shown positive effects of processing various organic substrates in VLA on methanogenic fermentation, including methanogenesis kinetics, complete decomposition of organic matter, methane content in biogas, and waste disinfection. The Indian team has a strong foundation in biogas from multi-feedstocks and pretreatment technologies. This project aims to study the integrated application of methods for intensifying anaerobic bioconversion to increase energy efficiency and compensate for energy costs using solar energy. The research will be conducted in intermediate generation anaerobic bioreactors with an integrated microbial electrolysis cell. The project will involve a consortium of Russian and Indian institutes and scientists, allowing for exchange of experience, increased publication activity, and assessment of the effectiveness of proposed methods for stimulating anaerobic conversion. A joint venture is expected after successful achievement of project objectives.
