Project Overview

The Meghalaya State in northeastern India is home to various intrusive features, including granite plutons and the Shillong group of metasediments. The proposed area, Nongpoh pluton, is an intrusive discordant body controlling the emplacement of granite plutons. The study aims to study the variation among granite varieties, the evolution of Nongpoh granitoids, and their relationship with the Shillong Plateau. Methodology includes fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and petrographic analysis. The objectives are to address petrogenetic problems, obtain a cogent petrogenetic model, and propose a crustal evolution model.

The research will involve collecting representative rock samples and analyzing them using various analytical techniques. Petrographic analysis will be performed on thin sections to reveal mineralogical content, textural, and modal characteristics. Geochemical analysis will be conducted using X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometry (XRF) and Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine major and trace elements content. Electron Microprobe Analyzer EPMA will be used to determine individual mineral phases and the chemical composition of the surrounding medium. The petrographical studies will provide insight into the problem of petrogenesis in different rock types of granite in the study area.
