Project Overview

The proposal aims to understand the microphysics of cloud particles and their impact on weather radar measurements. Despite years of research, cloud microphysical properties and processes, such as shape, size, type, nucleation strategies, riming, water vapor diffusional growth, and changing type with time, have not been properly estimated. The study aims to simulate scattering and propagation from particles of X-band dual polarization signal in higher levels of the cloud and simulate radar variables for various aspects of cloud microphysics. The main objectives include simulating particles in higher layers of the cloud, estimating scattering amplitude and phase, and simulating radar variables at 9.4 GHz. The study also aims to simulate particles in melting layers, such as melting hail, aggregates, and graupel, and simulating radar variables at 9.4 GHz. The research has potential and is being conducted in India. The main goal is to undertake a comprehensive simulation-based study to simulate particle size distribution in the cloud above the 0 C isotherm and simulate radar measurements at X-band. Various scenarios of orientation, shape, type, and size distribution will be simulated, and corresponding dual polarization radar measurements will be simulated. This research is considered groundbreaking and fundamental in the field of cloud microphysics.
