Project Overview

The Indo-Burmese ranges (IBR) in northeast India have evolved due to the geodynamic activity of Indian and Burmese plates. These ranges have several distinct tectonic domains, including the Namche Barwa Syntaxial Complexes, Naga and Manipur Hill Ranges, and Mizoram-Tripura Foreland basins. These ranges have undergone significant changes in paleo-geography and geological features. However, the southerly located sedimentary basins, such as the Surma Basin and Tripura-Sub Basin, have not received the same attention. These basins, which are composed of Himalayan and Tibetan derived sediments, have undergone similar tectonic evolution. Different researchers have different opinions on the sediments' provenance, with some suggesting the influx of sediments from Himalayan source rocks and others suggesting sedimentation from both Himalayan and Burmese arc sources due to drainage reorganization of the Paleo-Irrawaddy-Brahmaputra River system. This research work aims to understand uncertainties related to the provenance of the IBR, river systems, channel re-organization, diversions episodes, provenance shifting, sedimentary processes, depositional environment, paleo-climatic conditions, and sequential development of lithounits. The study will involve systematic mapping and modeling sedimentary sequences, litho-facies analysis, petrography, whole rock geochemistry, isotope study of detrital heavy minerals, sedimentary structures, and paleo-current direction.
