Project Overview

The unique ongoing deep drilling activity in the Koyna-Warna region for understanding the reservoir-triggered seismicity has led to the drilling of several deep boreholes - all of them penetrating the basement rocks underlying the Deccan Lavas. It has been established by us through our previous project that the basement gneisses at KBH-1 are predominantly 2.7 Ga old TTG gneisses. We had procured and installed a 193 nm LA system through this project, which shall be used extensively for further characterization the age of the basement rocks in the Koyna-Warna region in the present proposal. We plan to undertake, U-Pb zircon geochronology and zircon Hf isotope compositions by LA-ICP-MS and LA-MC-ICP-MS techniques from several basement samples representing 4 to 6 boreholes located on either side of the ~N-S Koyna River Fault Zone. We expect that the proposed studies would unambiguously establish the compositions and age of the basement complex and offer clear correlations with domains within the Dharwar craton to the south of the DVP. The project would cost about Rs. 66.0 Lakhs (including 10% institutional overheads). The project title, PI name and name of the Institution involved should precede the summary. The summary (in telegraphic language) should be a self-contained description of the research activity including (a) subject (b) research objectives (c) methodology to be adopted (d) expected outcome and deliverables of the project and (e) brief budget.
