Project Overview

Renewable energy conversion and storage are crucial for sustainable energy and the environment in the 21st century. Hydrogen generation from water electrolyzers is essential for sustainable energy and environmental preservation. However, the scarcity of pure water poses challenges. This proposal aims to provide a technological solution using earth-abundant seawater and a Mn-based polymorphic structure as a diffucion blocking layer for selective seawater electrolysis. The goal is to explore the Mn-based oxide structure as an anode for selective seawater conversion and develop a theoretical reaction model using electrochemical techniques. The proposal focuses on basic research on seawater electrolysis and aims to create a full electrolyzer for hyderogen generation. The techno-economy study with traditional electrolyzers and two-step seawater electrolysis will guide scaling up the technology for market-ready products.
