Project Overview

The proposed project aims to investigate the evolution and effects of microalloy precipitates in microalloyed steels. The project will involve thermal and thermomechanical processing, precipitate characterization, and mechanical property assessment. It will also study thermodynamic and kinetic aspects of precipitation, first-principles calculations on precipitate stability, and MD and DD-based simulations of dislocation-precipitation interaction. The objectives include thoroughly characterizing NbC, NbN, and Nb(C,N) precipitates in Nb microalloyed low-C steels, understanding the stages of evolution, and focusing on the evolution of atomic ratios and compositions within the atom clusters and precipitates. The project will also use density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations to understand the atomic structure and composition of precipitates. The project will also assess bulk mechanical properties like hardness, strength, ductility, and impact toughness. The project will last three years and has a proposed budget of INR 74,71,200 or -, with the entire fund being given to IIT Kharagpur.
