Project Overview

Metamaterials are engineered material systems with unit-cells arranged in periodic arrangements at spatial scales smaller than the wavelength of the phenomena they influence. Their properties are governed by the structural arrangement of individual unit-cells, which can manipulate wave propagation. Metamaterials, such as auxetics, exhibit unusual properties like density, bulk modulus, and permittivity. These structures are designed to interact with signals or excitations, affecting their macroscopic properties. Chiral auxetics exhibit unique deformation kinematics, resulting in negative Poisson's ratios and tailorable effective properties. This research focuses on a detailed parametric study of the frequency band structure of these structures, aiming to study a generalized chiral lattice and the effect of geometric parameters on effective material properties. The study also investigates the effect of nonlinearity on material properties and propagation characteristics, which can introduce additional wave propagation solutions not observable in linear structures. The study also considers the effect of nonlinear locally resonant units in these materials, which exhibit energy-dependent dynamic characteristics. This complex feature opens a new horizon for exploring tunable metamaterial structures that can be effectively and predictively designed.
