Project Overview

The study aims to develop predictive models that simulate deformation and fracture at the microscale, influencing macro-scale properties like fracture toughness at different temperatures. This will help predict the ductile to brittle transition temperature as a function of the microstructure. The model, once validated, can be used to understand the effects of microstructural features on the ductile to brittle transition in alloys. It will also address the stochasticity in fracture toughness measurement by using statistically similar microstructures. Although based on modified 9Cr-1Mo steel, the framework is applicable to many material systems used in extreme loading conditions. Understanding the correlation between microstructure and material behavior is crucial for designing novel materials and microstructures for various applications.
