Project Overview

Hydrogen is expected to be a significant green energy source in India, with an estimated 81 million USD hydrogen industry by 2025. However, electrolysis is not economically viable compared to other renewable energy sources. Biomass-based hydrogen production from sewage sludge can be a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative. The proposed Integrated Zero Discharge Model (DMPI) aims to develop an integrated pre-treatment system, protocols for enriched inocula, improve H2 production efficiency, optimize the process, demonstrate the model at a pilot-scale, and evaluate the economic and environmental sustainability of hydrogen recovery from sewage sludge. This project will reduce hydrogen production costs, increase hydrogen yield, and promote a zero-waste policy. The project will also benefit IIT Kharagpur and Denmark, promoting green energy transition and knowledge exchange.
