Project Overview

Bone cancer is a prevalent and deadly disease in children and young adults, with Osteosarcoma, Ewing's sarcoma, and chondrosarcoma having an annual incidence of over 8.7 per million people. Early detection is crucial for appropriate treatment and improved patient survival. Current methods like X-ray, MRI, and biopsy are essential for bone cancer diagnosis, but they suffer from poor resolution and require experienced radiologists for interpretation. The proposed research focuses on microwave-based biomedical imaging for early detection of cancerous tumors. This non-ionizing beam method offers healthier and more pleasant examinations, making portable microwave-based imaging more useful and effective. The project proposes a lens design for hyperthermia applicators for treating cancer cells, replacing large array applicators. The energy of the applicator will be focused on bone tumors for a specific period to kill affected tissues. The project aims to design and develop microwave imaging systems for early detection of bone tumors and their treatment using lens-based hyperthermia applicators. Applicators have advantages such as low profile, lightweight, adjustable, and low cost. This research aligns with Government of India initiatives such as sWAsTH BHARAT ABHIYAN and MAKE IN INDIA, demonstrating the importance of advanced product-oriented research in the healthcare system.
