Project Overview

Isolated renal mucormycosis (IRM) is a rare condition, affecting 20% of disseminated cases in immunocompetent individuals, particularly from India and China. The pathogenesis and genetic susceptibility of IRM are not yet fully understood. This study aims to characterize host cell receptors associated with IRM using renal epithelial cells (HEK-293 cell line). Luminex-based assays and nephelometry will evaluate cytokines and immunoglobulin profiles in IRM patients. The role of mutations in modulating PAMPs recognition and host TLR1 and TLR4 molecules will be evaluated. Next-generation sequencing will investigate the role of CARD9 and sTAT1 mutations in IRM susceptibility. Whole-exome sequencing will screen genetic variants predisposing to IRM. similar receptors have been found on endothelial cells, such as the fungal CotH3 protein and the β1-integrin receptor in pulmonary mucormycosis. screening naive and unknown renal epithelial cell surface receptors is crucial for defining the progression and early diagnosis of IRM in immunocompetent patients.
