Project Overview

The project aims to use melanin as an organic electrode material and an organic electrolyte for a sodium-ion battery. Novel tyrosinase enzymes will be used to prepare different sizes, colored melanin particles, quinone-based derivatives, and their sodium salts. The electrochemical evaluation of these particles will compare them with commercial electrode materials. A prototype cell will be fabricated for an organic sodium-ion battery using optimized melanin particles as the electrode material. The project aims to synthesize, characterize, and optimize these materials for use in electrochemical cells and batteries.

The study aims to optimize and prepare a non-aqueous electrolyte for organic electrodes, focusing on ionic conductivity, voltage stability, water content, and temperature stability. The electrochemical cell will be prepared using synthesized melanin and quinone derivatives, and the composite slurry-based electrodes will be assembled using standard protocols. The Indian research team will evaluate the synthesized organic materials using optimized electrolytes, comparing their performance with inorganic materials and identifying suitable application sectors. The best performing materials will be selected for further fabrication and testing.
