A Novel Process for Making Advanced Radiation Shielding Materials for Broad Application Spectrum

Implementing Organization

Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI)

Project Overview

An chemical method for the development of advanced radiation shielding powder useful for making advanced x- ray radiations shielding material in the form of tiles and panels have been developed which is useful for broad application spectrum by exploring the multi elemental, multi componental phases genetically present in raw materials namely red mud. The chemical treatment of red mud with citric acid and barium sulphate leads to the formation of radiation shielding powder. The synthesized powders have high density with multilayered, multicrystal and multi shielding phases necessary for achieving radiation shielding properties.

Benefits

The developed X-ray shielding materials and non-toxic, lead free and cost effective. It can be used to shield hazrdous X-rays that can emerge from the X-ray diagnosis, CT scanner and Cath lab.
