NeoStim: A Neuromuscular Stimulation Enabled Orthosis to Rehabilitate Grasping in Hemiplegia

Implementing Organization

Nikunj Arunkumar Bhagat

Project Overview

Current rehabilitation practices focus on inhibiting spasticity with stretching and weight-bearing exercises, which is not enough to restore normal hand function. To address these challenges and improve hand mobility, we propose to restore grasping and releasing objects using our patented neuromuscular electrical stimulation [NMES] technology. NMES is application of external electrical pulses on the skin surface, to activate underlying nerves and cause muscles to contract.

Benefits

NeoStim is more effective in hand rehabilitation because it uses superior CCS technology and allows training
of multiple grasps at the same time. By comparison, H200, MyndMove [MyndTec Inc.], WalkEx [Walnut Medical Pvt. Ltd.], and
Motimove [3F] can stimulate multiple muscles but amongst them, only H200 and MyndMove is programmed to implement multiple
hand grasps.
