Project Overview

A simple and cost effective process for the synthesis of three dimensional bioactive synthetic bone grafts possessing both bioactivity and mechanical strength. Results in three dimensional BCP nanocomposites blocks for implant(s) having, cell adhesion, cellular metabolic activity and mechanical compressive strength in the range of human cancellous bone. The process completely avoids gel casting in synthesizing porous 3D BCP scaffolds, so as to obtain 3D load bearing BCP blocks without requiring energy intensive processes. In comparison to reported mechanical compressive strength of BCP scaffolds the present invention provides BCP blocks of higher mechanical compressive strength. The process does not use porogen and binder to prepare porous BCP scaffolds, which may generate toxic chemicals after the implantation of the scaffolds in the body.
