Novel Inexpensive Membrane System as Import Substitute for Production of Demineralized Sterile Water

Implementing Organization

Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers
Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT)

About

Low-cost compact hydrophilized polyamide membrane cascaded system for production of Type II/III grade ultrapure water. The water has several applications that include water for media preparation, HPLC grade water, caustic preparation, cell culture preparation, water for soil test kits, dialysate solutions . The product caters for both industrial benefit and societal . Pilot plant of 500 L/h capacity (3 nos.) installed in Neproplus hospital to provide hemodialysis water to 1 lakh patients suffering from renal failure.

Outcome / Output

The process is more economical and costs Rs. 80,000/- for lab system (40-60 L/h) Rs. 2.5 lakh for pilot plant (500 L/h) Maintenance free compared to multinational companies that charge Rs. 1 lakh per annum, Compared to conventional separation methods, the technology utilizes very less energy as the process design doesn't include energy intensive processes such as distillation or evaporation. No additional chemical regeneration required as the technology replaces use of ion exchange resins
