Development of Space Qualified Vapor Chamber

Implementing Organization

National Institute Of Technology (NIT) Patna, Bihar

About

The project aims at development of a two-phase vapor chamber to mitigate the problem of hotspots in the space-based electronic devices. Vapor chambers are essentially a flat heat pipe of rectangular shape with small thickness (usually less than 10 mm). Vapor chamber can be sandwiched between the hotspot region and the heat sink, in order to spread the high heat flux from the hotspot region to a nominal value at the heat sink side of the vapor chamber (due to the increase in area), which would then be handled with relative ease with the existing TCS. A charging station and a testing rig would be fabricated to evaluate the thermal performance of the vapor chamber. Successful completion of this project is anticipated to facilitate the development of advanced cooling strategy, which will allow the development of safe and more reliable high power density electronic systems for space applications.
