Project Overview
The project aims at water security assessment at the river basin level using the water footprint concepts. In India, there are various basins and sub-basins of Himalayan rivers (Satluj-Beas-Ganga Yamuna-Barak), west-flowing rivers (Mahi-Sabarmati-Narmada-Tapi), east-flowing rivers (Mahanadi-Brahmani-Baitarni-Sbarnarekha), and peninsular rivers (Godavari-Krishna Pennar-Cauvery), which has recently been categorized as adversely affected sub-basins in terms of its soil and water quality. The project proposes to study water use in the Hindon basin under various sectors will be determined using the 'water footprint concept. The assessment will be conducted to quantify in space and time the Hindon Basin's water footprint. Further, the study will also assess this water footprint's environmental, social and economic sustainability and formulate a response strategy
