Punjab Agricultural University

Project Overview

Salinity is a major agricultural constrain in the semi-arid region of Punjab, with poor underground water and erratic canal irrigation systems. Quinoa, a high-nutrient, versatile crop, has potential to contribute to food security and diversification. Its nutritional value is high, with a balanced protein and fat content. However, in India, lack of awareness and low adoption hinder its adoption. The proposal proposes standardizing cultivation practices and processing techniques to enhance protein quality and improve women's diets.

The proposed project aims to study the impact of irrigation schedules and water quality on quinoa growth, yield, water components, and soil properties. Quinoa, a plant species with nutritional benefits, can adapt to different soil and climatic conditions, making it a viable alternative to wheat for celiac disease patients. However, its availability is limited due to high import costs and lack of knowledge among consumers. The project will conduct field trials at Punjab Agricultural University and conduct laboratory work and quality analysis in a quality analysis lab. The goal is to prepare value-added quinoa-based products for women's diets and demonstrate cultivation, processing, and milling of quinoa to women farmers and entrepreneurs.
