Project Overview
India is one of the largest producers of spearmint oil, with a production of around 325 MT in 2015. However, spearmint oil production is declining due to factors such as competition from China, increasing land under M. arvensis, poor oil content, and high planting material costs. To meet global demand, the CSIR-CIMAP is proposing the popularization and demonstration of the CIM-Mohak novel variety of spearmint, which has an erect growth habit, sucker producing ability, high oil content, and unique aroma. The project aims to promote large-scale commercial cultivation of the CIM-Mohak variety, increase socio-economic enhancement, increase acreage under spearmint cultivation, and produce high-quality essential oil. The project will involve training farmers on agro-technology, cultural practices, and marketing information, generating employment opportunities and supplying high-value spearmint oil for the flavor and confectionery industries in India and abroad.
