Project Overview

This project aims to design robust and reliable backhaul communication systems using terahertz (THz) and free-space optics (FSO) links in parallel for 6G communications. The project will focus on switching and combining methods between parallel FSO and THz signals at the receiver for improved performance. Soft switching methods will be used to compensate for back-and-forth switching in hard switching. The hybrid FSO/THz network will be extended to multihop, mesh, and integrated access and backhaul networks. THz links can also be used for indoor IoT and sensors-based applications. The project will study the effects of practical aspects such as atmospheric attenuation, pointing, fading, atmospheric turbulence, number of users, hops, and SNR threshold on the hybrid FSO/THz-based communication system. Various combining methods at the receiver and deployment of multiple antennas (multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) setups) will be used to compensate for these limitations and improve the communication system's performance.
