Project Overview

The 5G communications revolutionized the industry by introducing new services and applications with stringent quality-of-service requirements, including enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), ultra-reliable and low-latency communication (uRLLC), and massive machine-type communication (mMTC). Traditional network architectures were unable to support these diverse requirements, leading to network slicing as a viable approach. However, rigorous analysis and investigation are needed to meet the high-reliability and low-latency requirements of uRLLC applications. Mobile edge computing (MEC) is a promising technology for addressing uRLLC requirements by placing service-related network functions (NFs) near users. However, due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks and limited networking facilities at the MEC, putting everything at the edge is not feasible. Existing models mainly consider static network statistics, deteriorating network performance and resource utilization in real-time. This project focuses on the reliability and latency requirements of uRLLC applications in 5G networks, proposing reliability and latency-aware network slice modeling and resource allocation techniques for uRLLC applications co-existing with eMBB in the end-to-end 5G network. The research will consider real-world uRLLC use-cases and 3GPP-compliant network platforms to test the efficacy of the slice model and developed algorithms.
