Dehairing and Fibre Opening for Complete Elimination of Lime and Sodium Sulphide

Implementing Organization

Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI)

Project Overview

Lime and sodium sulfide is completely eliminated during dehairing and fiber opening process for raw materials by adding water and proteolytic enzyme. It exhibits activity at experimental pH and experimental temperature, optionally in the presence of silicate salt to produce soft and subtle leather.

Benefits

Replacing the conventional hair burning and osmotic swelling methods through use of protease and amylase for selective unhairing and fibre opening
, Enzyme only dehairing and fibre opening without the use of lime and sulphide, Provides elimination of one unit operation used in conventional leather making (deliming) thereby enhancing the productivity, Enables reduction in process time and usage of chemicals.
