Process for the Enrichment of Methyl Ricinoleate from Castor Oil Methyl Esters by Liquid-liquid Extraction

Project Overview

Castor oil is the only commercial source of unsaturated hydroxy acid (12-hydroxy-cis-9-octadecenoic acid) that is ricinolecic acid to the extent of 85-90% which is the feedstock for many of the useful Industrial chemicals. Previous works involves castor oil fractionation into triricinolein by way of which an enriched ricinoleic acid may be obtained with lesser yields. The methods where using a mixture of solvents in the fractionation of castor fatty acids resulted not only in low yields but recovery and reuse of solvents is difficult for commercial exploitation and the storage of castor fatty acids is difficult due to estolide formation. The present process was developed for the enrichment of methyl ricinoleate upto 98% purity from castor oil methyl esters by liquid-liquid extraction in a ternary system of castor oil methyl esters, refined vegetable oil or light paraffin and aqueous polar solvent.
