A novel melamine-chrome complex for leather processing is provided which is a metal based synthetic tanning agent having ability to enhance the thermal and physical resistance of the hide/skin when used in tanning. it acts as a tanning agent as well as retanning agent. The process for the preparation of the melamine-chrome complex is also given.

In addition to rechroming, filling of the looser portions like belly is possible, Chromium-melamine condensate devoid of formaldehyde as cross linker, Ideal replacement to formaldehyde based condensed products employed for retanning and other industrial applications, Due to the presence of large number of hydroxyl groups, it provides additional binding sites for fixation of chromium as well as other organic molecules such as dyes.
