"Development of Next-Generation Vaccines, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics "

About

a) Animal Biotechnology: India's animal husbandry sector, the largest in the world, is crucial for the economic stability of over two-thirds of the rural population and contributes to food security. The Department of Biotechnology supports research to improve livestock productivity and health. Recent advancements in biotechnologies like omics and synthetic biology present new opportunities for enhancing livestock interventions through collaborative efforts.

b) Aquaculture: The Indian aquaculture sector suffers an annual economic loss of over ₹20,000 crores due to diseases from various pathogens, which accounts for around 15% of total production. The spread of these diseases has been accelerated by intensified agriculture and global trade, leading to strict international regulations that often result in export rejections, especially in the animal, poultry, and aquaculture sectors. There is a pressing need for science-driven technology solutions for disease prevention and management that also address antimicrobial resistance. Funding is sought for multidisciplinary consortium proposals to develop viable next-generation solutions, including mRNA vaccines and AI-driven drug discovery, to promote a self-reliant, biosecure aquatic and livestock ecosystem.
