About

The proposal aims to assess glacier dynamics in the Upper Ganga Basin, central Himalaya, Uttarakhand, under changing climate scenarios. It focuses on glacier-related hazards and will use high-resolution satellite data to map and analyze changes in glacier parameters. The study will validate results through field surveys on six proposed glaciers and gather high-resolution surface information through an unmanned aerial vehicle. The findings will be useful in glacier modeling simulations and planning water resource management for policymakers under climate change.

The proposal outlines a methodology for observing the Raj Bank glacier, including high-resolution DGPS surveys, extraction of glacier surface features and thermal profiles, estimating ice ablation using surface stakes, and estimating ice thickness using GPR. The study will also use hydrological measurements, meteorological data collection, and black carbon measurements to understand the glacier's mass balance and energy balance. The proposal also includes a gauging station to estimate the discharge of the melt water stream, an AWS to collect meteorological parameters, and an AE-33 ethalometer for accurate measurement of black carbon concentration. The methodology aims to provide valuable insights into the glacier's morphology and dynamics.
