About

Flame retardants (FR) are essential for high-end consumer products, but halogenated, sulphonated, organophosphorus, and boron-based FRs are hazardous to the environment. Inorganic FR chemicals, such as inorganic minerals, have gained interest due to their non-toxic nature and ability to suppress smoke and char formation. This project aims to synthesize inorganic and composite FR chemicals and study their spectrochemical, thermal, conductivity, and electrokinetic potential. The selected IMs are white, which can enhance fabric coloration and facilitate white garments for strategic applications. Thermal properties will be explored using TGA/DTG and DSC, while particle size analysis will determine the ease of incorporating FR into materials. The flame-retardant properties of FR-treated materials will be studied using various tests. Metal hydroxides, aluminium hydroxides, layered double hydroxides, metal oxides, metal carbonates, and calcium carbonates are potential flame retardants and white pigments for natural fabrics.
