About

Objective: Develop the coke making process in pilot scale (25 kg) and check the suitability of the resultant coke for blast furnace application

Summary: The proposed project is aimed at developing a process to prepare coke from non-coking coal in pilot scale (25 kg scale). Non-coking coals do not possess the swelling and thermal plasticity properties required for coke formation during carbonization due to difference in chemical structure compared to coking coal. The prime objective is to induce these swelling and thermal plasticity properties in non-coking coal through alteration of structural properties in non-coking coal. This will be achieved by blending of suitable natural product based additives followed by thermal processing steps. We have performed a bench scale optimization of blending of non-coking coal with suitable natural additives and already filed two Indian patents in the process. In this present proposal, we want develop the coke making process in pilot scale (25 kg) and check the suitability of the resultant coke for blast furnace application. ASTM Drum Test will be carried out to assess stability, hardness and CSR/CRI will be determined to assess reactivity of the produced coke.
