About

Objective: Develop commercially viable process for the synthesis of FDCA with feedback/raw material from industry and carry out economics analysis with industry partner.

Summary: Bio-plastic derived from biomass is appreciated as the future in plastic making. An analgue to PTA in PET synthesis is bio-derived compound, 2 5-furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), that is produced from 5-hydroxymethul furfural (HMF) via oxidation reaction. With FDCA, PEF is produced, which has better properties than PET but still no commercial plant is operational for FDCA synthesis. At NCL, through FTT project, HMF synthesis is shown with TRL4. In this proposal, as a natural extension, oxidation of crude HMF to FDCA is proposed using economical and recyclable catalyst along with inputs received industry to make economical process.
