About

Nowcasting of orographic rain is very less studied world-wide as well as there is a lack of knowledge of error sources in qualitative precipitation estimation (QPE) of such type of rain. The present proposal will investigate the DWR data for developing short term forecasting technique applicable for hilly region (Agartala and Mohanbari). DWR can provide accurate, high quality data which can detect wind shear, turbulence, rotation of thunder storm along with intensity of precipitation with improved range performance within limitations. However the information provided by it cannot be entirely relied upon and maintenance of it is costly for proving quality information and requires expertise to understand data. Inter comparison of the data of DWR Cherrapunjee (if available) and DWR Agartala and DWR Mohabari will be done before finalizing source of radar data. Efforts will be made to collect all ground based precipitation measurement data of northeast India(Specifically NESAC, IMD, G.B. Panth Institute and Gauhati University) to develop reliable precipitation estimates. Here in this project proposal open source Seepage Modeling software (SEEP/W) and Stability Modeling software (SLOPE/W) will be used to take soil unit weight pressure (kN/m^3), soil cohesion pressure (5KPa), angle of friction Phi (degree) of each layer in the model, pore water pressure condition (piezometricline) and auto-generated pore water content as input and produces critical slip surface with the factor of safety result in terms of factor of safety vs lamda graph as output. As such DWR data is never used for such application (landslide caused by orographic rain) over hilly regions(Agartala and Mohanbari) of India and only known method utilize INSAT satellite data by North Eastern space Application Center(NESAC).
